Episode 11: The Wave and the Phoenix

“According to the story, all of the melodies of Mew’s song are drawn to the melody that holds the power of fire–that is my power.” Ash explained. “This isn’t going to hurt; all I did was lay my hands on your sisters while their eyes were closed and sang the melody of fire: Take a melody…

“And…” Misty was interested now.

“They all glowed white, which means they have no power in them.” Ash concluded. “The only one I have yet to check is you.”

Misty was unsure–the story she had heard for so long, and for so many years, couldn’t possibly be happening, could it? Yet Ash couldn’t have learned his abily to discern superpowers by accident. She felt the urge inside to trust him. Besides, if I trust him, I may get some answers in how the Gym got damaged like this!

She turned to Ash. “Okay…try your power on me.”

Ash waited until Misty had closed her eyes, then once again laid a hand on Misty’s chest and softly sang Take a melody…

Everyone gasped as a deep blue aura surrounded Misty, and she replied back Simple as can be… A sapphire ring also appeared on her left hand as the aura faded.

“All right!” Brock was elated.

Misty just looked at the ring adorning one finger on her left hand. “What’s this for?”

Ash was about to answer when he heard scratching at the doorway. He got up to see what the noise was, and gasped–the Arcanine was back, and frantically trying to break down the door!

“Misty, transform!” Brenna begged as Ash ran to hold the door shut.

“How?” Misty asked quizzically.

“Say ‘Melodic Power’ and something to do with water!” Brenna replied. “Ash can’t hold back the door forever!” She gestured to Ash, who was struggling to hold back the snarling Arcanine on the other side.

“Need a little boost?” Brock smiled, snapping to summon his guitar. His mic soon appeared on his face in a flash of leaves. With that, he started playing an oddly relaxing melody and singing in a language no one understood at first. The sapphire in Misty’s ring began to glow, enveloping her in a faint blue light. Ash was also enveloped in light, only his was red.

“Wait…isn’t that tune the Earth God’s Lyric from that one Zelda game?” Daisy recognized the tune Brock was singing.

“I think so, but the words don’t make any sense!” Lilly agreed.

Suddenly, Misty’s voice was heard over the song: “Melodic Power! Wave!”

When Misty awoke a few seconds later, she was shocked to find herself enveloped in a deep blue cocoon of light hovering over an ocean. Once her feet touched the water, the cocoon disappeared, yet her body still glowed a deep blue. Some water droplets bonded to her hands and became some white gloves with deep blue trim and a sapphire in each hand. Next, a flowing white skirt with deep blue trim appeared on her lower half, with some sapphires appearing on it seconds later. Some waves next bonded to her feet, leaving behind some small white boots with a water droplet on them. On her upper half, an odd white bathing suit-like outfit laced in shades of blue appeared, complete with sapphires dotting it. To complete the look, a sapphire blue ribbon appeared in her hair.

“I…can’t..hold…on…” Ash grunted as he was finally thrown to the floor by the Arcanine bursting into the room. It was immediately met with a swarm of sapphires flying in its face!

“Whoa…” Lily was impressed. “How’d you do that?”

“Easy…” Misty smiled. “I just yelled ‘Sapphire Rain’ and I just sprayed a bunch of sapphires at that Arcanine.”

“I can do something similar–” Ash started, but mustered enough strength to leap out of the way of the angered canine Pokemon. However, one of the Arcanine’s paws smacked Ash in the face, sending him flying to the floor. Surprisingly, the red aura Brock’s song was generating absorbed any wounds he may have received, giving him the strength to call “Melodic Power! Fever!”

Although his eyes were closed to protect them from the light surrounding him, he could feel himself changing–changing into something more powerful. Furthermore, he could not feel his own clothes on him any more, but he assumed that he was receiving new ones, ones better suited for driving away monsters and rogue Pokemon.

A deep blue shirt appeared first, followed by what looked like a red vest at first, but it soon lengthened itself to come down to Ash’s knees. Some gold swirls completed the look. Some black leggings appeared on his legs, with a pair of boots appearing on his feet afterwards. For the finishing touch, Ash’s cap turned into a red bandanna decorated with the same gold swirls his vest was.

“AUGH!!!!” Misty screamed as the Arcanine began chasing her around the pool walkways. Before long, it had cornered her at the back wall of the hallway leading to the Leader’s chambers. She called “Sapphire Rain!” in desperation, in hopes that the waves of blue stones and water would be a signal for help.

Ash raced into the hall, just in time to see the Sapphire Rain attack connect. He gritted his teeth–this Arcanine had gone far enough in bothering them, and he was going to do anything to save his friend. Furthermore, he could feel his anger intensifying as Brock’s odd song drifted into the hallway.
He unleashed his signature war cry–the same desperate roar he had once used on his travels in Houen–and jumped skyward, with the energy surrounding him transforming into flames. Although it appeared Ash was engulfed in fire, he felt no pain–only power as he zipped over the panicked Arcanine’s head.

Misty braced herself as she heard Ash’s voice call “Phoenix Soul!”, followed by a huge explosion of light and flames. When she looked again, the Arcanine was nowhere to be found, and Ash was standing before her. He was breathing heavily from fatigue, prompting the others to run to help him.

“What was that attack?” Brenna was impressed.

“That was a real bushwhacker!” Hayley agreed.

Burakku na utau awaikku new fuera. Kaichou explained, again in half garbled English.

“She says that melody I used to help Misty transform also awakened a new power within Ash.” Brock translated. “Although…I wanna know just what that attack was too.”

“I think the anger Ash felt over Misty getting attacked was amplified by Brock’s power.” Brenna began. “The anger combined with his melody’s power for a sort of desperation attack.”

“Desperation or no, it saved my life!” Misty smiled as she gave Ash a hug.

“Hey, be gentle…” Ash cautioned as Misty threw himself into his arms. He was still tired from using his new attack.

“Well, now that the Arcanine’s gone, where’s the next critter at?” Hayley asked.

Houen…melody nido ayuna! Kachou gasped, showing everyone a scene of a familiar brown haired girl with a green bandanna on her head running from some rogue Crobats….
